Kristopher's Ravings

In this section of the web site I am listing my grandsons writings concerning survival, emergency actions and camping. He is currently 11 years old and I guess he will take after me eventually and be a writer. Well here are his first articles that he has completed.

April 6, 2009 - What to bring camping
April 8, 2009 -

DelMarVa Survival Trainings Daily Features

February 2012

February 4, 2012 - The picture says it all as BO tramples our constitution.

January 30, 2012 - "Sign Up for Free Text Alerts from The Weather Channel" I signed up for this free service recently. They send you texts based on what's going on in your zip code. You can choose what to sign up for (extreme weather only, or that and a daily forecast, etc). Granted, sometimes it gets annoying when they wake you up in the middle of the night with a "High Wind" warning, but I figure the hassle is far outweighed by the benefits.

January 30, 2012 - These guys weren’t kidding around when they converted this 1946 Federal semi-truck into their very own home on wheels. It weighs 11 tons and can carry some 200 gallons of fuel. That’ is some Bug out vehicle!

January 29, 2012 - "Pure Honey Cough Drops" I’m a lightweight when it comes to cough drops.  The industrial strength menthol ones are intolerable to me.  I’ve always felt like such a weenie about it, but I can’t understand how so many people willingly put those things in their mouths.  For a dare, maybe, for money, certainly if the price were right, voluntarily, not me. Click here

January 29, 2012 - "How to Plant an Outdoor Potted Herb Garden" Committing to plant placement gives me the willies.  Thankfully, my neighbor had the solution.  A potted herb garden! To see how easy it is just Click here

January 29, 2012 - "Homemade Cheez-Its" After reading my true confession about Cheez-Its, a reader took pity on me and sent a recipe for homemade cheese crackers (thanks, Amanda). My sixteen-year-old son took it upon himself to try his hand at making cheese crackers and deemed them “awesome,” not to mention really easy to make. Trouble is, I follow a gluten free diet. And let me tell you: just smelling those homemade Cheez-Its just wasn’t cutting it. Taking a cue from this recipe, I decided to attempt a gluten free version. Click here

January 29, 2012 - "Build a Garden Bench from a Bed"  A place to sit is what turns your garden into a destination, a place to linger, a respite from the daily grind.  Seating transforms your yard into a park like oasis where you can soak in the beauty of what you’ve labored to create. Click here

January 28, 2012 - "How to Kill a Chicken" By Renee Wilkinson. ***Warning: This is a pretty graphic post about how to butcher a chicken, complete with pictures and lots of description. My intent is to help people who are preparing to butcher their first bird.*** click here

January 28, 2012 - "Make a worm bin out of a bath tub" Over at LifeBoat Farm they have created this great DIY Worm Farm out of an old bathtub.  What I like about this build is they could have easily taken the bathtub propped it up on some cinder blocks and have been done with it.  They took the extra effort with the wood enclosure (with bonus storage shelf) and proper drainage making use of the actual drain it almost appears that this is the true use for this bath tub. Click here

January 28, 2012 - "Making your own toilet paper planting strips" My previous attempt at making planting strips worked ok, lapsed a bit on the watering, but had a few surviving carrots.  This time around I decided to go with the classic technique at making planting strips with simple toilet paper. Click here

January 27, 2012 - "Cheap LED Light and Grow Box"  I have one major problem last year with growing seedlings, running out of space. I grow many different types of plants with various germination/growth rates and varied start dates.  This forces me to make sacrifices for placement of my movable light and eventually forced to move some plants outside earlier than I should.  The light needs to be close to the newly emerging seedlings, but can’t be burning the more mature plants growing into it.  My solution to this problem is a LED storage container grow box. Click here

January 25, 2012 - "No Death Panels? They Are Here Now" Gary North. When critics of Obama-care warned of death panels, the government dismissed all such talk as scaremongering. There will never be such panels. You have the government’s word. Oh yeah? Tell it to this mother. click here

January 22, 2012 - "Trivia" If you live in a part of the world that has mandatory gasohol "contains up to 10% ethanol" you need never buy dry-gas ever again. The gasoline is already loaded with alcohol.

January 21, 2012 - "$20 a week food storage - Week One"

5 lbs of Sugar $2.00
3 lbs. Crisco $3.00
5 lbs. flour $2.00
5 lbs. rice $2.00
6 cans tuna $2.00
5 lbs. beans $3.00
3 cans spaghetti sauce $3.00
5 lbs spaghetti $3.00

Prices listed are approximate and you may feel free to substitute items to suit your family tastes.

January 18, 2012 - "How to survive a heart Attack when alone". Let's say it's 6:15 PM and you're going home (alone of course), after an unusually hard day on the job. You're really tired, upset and frustrated. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to drag out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself. Click here

January 14, 2012 - "Doomsday Gun" Doomsday Gun was a 1994 television film produced by HBO, dramatizing the life of Canadian supergun designer Dr. Gerald Bull and his involvement in Project Babylon, Saddam Hussein's plan to build a supergun with a range of over 500 miles. It was the first television drama to deal with covert U.S. and British involvement with Saddam Hussein preceding the 1991 Gulf War, and "coolly eviscerates" the Bush and Thatcher administrations for violating the international arms embargo during Iraq's war with Iran, according to Variety. January 9, 2012 - "A Liberty Bell Prophecy for America" By Joseph Parish. America can be proud of its countless deserving symbols representing freedom and projecting a favorable image of our historical past but none are as legendary as the Liberty Bell. I chanced upon some tidbit folklore the other day as I was wandering around the internet and wanted to organize and share it with everyone. It relates to the Liberty Bell and America’s future. It proves to be some very interesting reading. Click here

January 8, 2012 - ""NASA's Warning" Perhaps NASA is trying to tell us something. You look at the video and determine for yourself what the deal is here. Click here

January 6, 2012 - "How to make a manual washing machine – no electricity" It may seem funny now but when TSHTF and electricity is unavailable this method of washing clothing could very well be a life saver. Click here

January 6, 2012 - "Honey Whole Wheat Bagels" By Laura. I used to make these bagels all the time and then I guess I forgot about them.  Recently the boys asked, “WHEN are you going to make those yummy bagels again?!”  (I think they ended the sentence with “oh our Beautiful Mother Dearest” or something like that.) Click here

January 5, 2012 - "Downloads" I was wandering around the internet the other day and discovered the following spreadsheets at Stealth Survival Website. They are included in our download section for you. Be sure to visit the stealth Survival site for more great information. To download the files Click here.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

December 30, 2011 - "If You Had to Evacuate Your Home What Is the One Thing You Would Take With You?" By Barbara Caldwell. If you had to evacuate your home because of a disaster, what is the one thing you would take with you (besides your family, of course)? Have you thought about this? With the scope and variety of disasters that have occurred over the past year, many of us are becoming more and more concerned that the American Main Street is not prepared for what could come their way. Click here

December 30, 2011 - "Emergency Kit Toilet: Easy, Safe, and Sanitary" By Mike O'Hare. Losing one or all of your utilities for a couple of hours is an inconvenience, but what if it lasts longer, sometimes a lot longer, due to a natural disaster such as flood, fire, earthquake, hurricane, or even the unthinkable act of terrorism? Are you prepared to support you and your family's basic needs to survive until help arrives or government resources can actively respond? Click here

December 30, 2011 - "Preparing for Chaos in 2012: Emergency Lighting When the Grid Goes Down" By Mike Kuykendall. Whether you think 2012 will be "just" an economic collapse or "the end of the world as we know it" (TEOTWAWKI) as some fear, you need to have an emergency plan for lighting when the power grid goes down. Perhaps it will be gone altogether or maybe it will just become less reliable, but either way, candles will not cut it in 2012. Click Here

December 26, 2011 - Here is a hint that many people don't realize. One should keep a few tubes of super-glue in your first aid kit for not only to seal cuts but for repairing glasses as well. My daughter-in-law found out the hard way.

Members please check the member area as updates have taken place.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

December 25, 2011 - "Food Storage: Powdered Milk" Learn everything you need to know about which kind of powdered milk you should have in your food storage and how to mix it. Click here

December 23, 2011 - "How to Make Your Own Urban Survival Air Conditioning" Danny Durden. Here’s an awesome video that shows you how to build an improvised survival air conditioning unit for your home. If there is one thing I can’t deal with its heat and humidity. If I lost power I know that I can deal with cold and harsh winter months by prepping with winter survival gear, but a hot and sweaty summer day without AC can be quite unbearable. Also, this is not a long-term solution; it’s only a short-term survival fix and cannot work in a total SHTF type scenario.  Click here

December 23, 2011 - "Websites of Interest" Be sure to click on the link to the left to visit our websites of interest. The latest update takes to to SLOOH Space Camera where you can track asteroids, meteors and the space events. If you know of an interesting site that we should consider for entry please let us know.

December 20, 2011 - "Mason Jar Oil Lamps" Pictured are the items you will need to make these. A jar with lid, filling (pinecones, potpourri, Fabric, buttons, marbles, stones, dried fruit or chilies, glass ornaments, hard candies, etc. The only items I know of that do not work well are photos and chocolate. A glass wick holder, and fiberglass wick, 4 to 6 inches in length and a User safety tag, Click here

December 20, 2011 - "Advice from an Israeli Agent" Juval Aviv was the Israeli Agent upon whom the movie ' Munich ' was based. He was Golda Meir's bodyguard, and she appointed him to track down and bring to justice the Palestinian terrorists who took the Israeli athletes hostage and killed them during the Munich Olympic Games. December 19, 2011 - "">10 Things Every Home Should Have For Short-term Survival" by Skip Coryell. A few weeks ago, the lights in my house flickered, came back on, then died. The temperature was 32 degrees outside, and it was getting dark fast. I live out in the boondocks and that happens a half dozen times a year. I’ve learned to prepare myself for these little adventures in time travel back to the year 1794, and it’s not so bad really. Why, I can remember as a kid we used to love when a thunderstorm would knock out the power or when a blizzard would come and snow us in for days at a time. But in 1965 people were better prepared both physically and mentally for a loss of power. We lived in a different era. Click here

December 19, 2011 - "Eating Insects for Survival" By Keith McCafferty. How to tell if a bug is safe to eat and why insects (most of them) are one of the most important survival foods. The first time I floated Montana's Smith River with John Hirvela, the only food we took was a sack of potatoes and a shaker of salt. My friend assured me this was all we'd need. We'd cook trout and round off every meal with watercress salad gathered at a spring about 10 miles into the five-day float. · It was the kind of plan that sounds better at home than it does once you've launched your canoe.
