Still time for that Survival New Years resolution By Joseph Parish Although the New Year has already started you still have sufficient time to create that all important Survival New Years resolution list. We always hope for the best of situations but one never knows what disasters will be presented to us during the course of the year. That is why being prepared is so important. The year 2009 has been predicted to bring with it an increase in destructive weather phenomena. We are already seeing some very mean and dangerous winter storms. Look at the weather in New England area or perhaps in the great lakes region. These weather conditions are life threaten and we must be prepared for. The coming hurricane season is expected to be one of the worse that has ever been recorded. According to the U.S. weather research team located at Colorado State University we are in for some major hurricanes this coming year. Predictions state at least 14 tropical storms with at least seven of these developing into devastating hurricanes. In any event I am sure that regardless of where you may reside and what natural disasters are prominent in your particular area it would be a great time to sit in front of the fireplace and review your emergency preparedness plans. In fact you may wish to consider these plans as a sort of New Year’s Resolution. I have listed the three major areas that you should seriously consider. They are: Equip Yourself to Survive It does not matter in the least what the actual disaster will be when it happens. The important point is that we are ready for it. You should plan to have sufficient food supplies and the necessary survival gear available and properly stored. Having the correct supplies tend to make the disasters a bit easier to get through. It wouldn’t hurt in the least if you had a small portable generator available to power your vital items during an emergency crisis. Create an Emergency Plan The second point to be made here is an adequate plan to follow during an emergency. If disaster befalls you make sure that all members of your party know how to contact loved ones in the event that you become separated. Have a central location where everyone can meet up and regroup. We must learn to take care of ourselves and not rely upon the government. Be familiar with your house Lastly in the event of a tornado or perhaps an earthquake would you know which room in your home is the safest to be in? Make certain that your home is as disaster proof as you possibly can get it. Follow recommended procedures to ensure that your home is safe in any sort of emergency. There area lots of information readily available on the internet and most of it is free. All you have to do is look for it and download that information which pertains to you and your family. In any event we would like to wish you a safe and prosperous New Year. Copyright @ 2009 Joseph Parish
