Prepare for the time disaster strikes By Joseph Parish Since 9-11 America has been making preparations for any sort of disaster that may be tossed at it particularly those which originate at the hands of our enemies. We have developed Emergency Planning Teams as well as various strategies in order to protect the public from a vast number of calamities ranging from pandemic flu, manmade or natural disasters and those which originate from potential terrorist organizations. It really would not matter whether the danger originated from a terrorist act, an accidental chemical release or some sort of unusual infectious disease as we would still need special training and preparations. America has increased the number of first responders who risk their lives in response to any sort of emergency. These professionals include fire and EMT personnel, law enforcement officers, state and municipal health department members as well as medical center staff. Although the emergency response teams have grow greatly we still face one major obstacle in our goal towards survival – the individual themselves. I know as a fact that many people are taking the very act of learning to provide for themselves in an emergency very lightly. I can not stress that we must learn to take care of ourselves. We can’t rely upon any government authorities to be there in the event of an emergency. Government agencies can only expend themselves so much and in the event of a major disaster they simply can not respond as necessary. This makes it all the more important that you and I as citizens know how to take the proper actions and make the correct decisions when the lives of our families are on the line. Just how many people who are visiting this website actually have enough food set aside for three days? How about for seven days? Okay how long can you go without support from outside agencies in your food capabilities? I know several people who are well aware that I am prepared for emergencies and instead of getting prepared themselves they casually mention with a smile “Well I know where I will go when disaster strikes.” All I can say to this is I am sorry but I will be at the door with my weapons to prevent you from entering my space. There simply is no excuse for anyone not to be prepared. I have heard just about every one of these weak excuses that people provide ranging from lack of money to unable to locate the proper equipment. These are weak in the least. The Mormon religion has graciously provided us with a 5 to 10 dollar a week means of saving food in the event of an emergency. All we have to do is listen to these people and actually do it. The principle is very simple and merely requires spending an extra 5 to 10 dollars for food that will be saved for an emergency. Survival skills are usually necessary in emergencies. Delmarva Survival Training provides many of these skills freely at no cost to the person but believe it or not we have had terrible attendance at our classes. This ether tells me that everyone in the area is well versed in survival information or they simply do not care. We can’t be that lax that we don’t care for it will be our families who will suffer. We are about to enter a new year as December departs and January comes to us with open arms. I sincerely hope that this New Year will bring some new faces to our next training session. In fact if everyone who comes brings a friend we can all rest assured that we will be ready when the next disaster strikes. Copyright @2009 Joseph Parish
