Tips for surviving a riot
With the national election coming to a close today I have
come to the realization that no matter what the outcome,
50% of America will be disappointed. There have been
numerous claims that if Barack Hussein Obama is not
chosen as "The One" to lead America then there will be
rioting in the streets.
Just the very fact that this is such a polarizing
election makes it seem likely that we will experience
trouble in some form or another. Should you suddenly find
yourself in the middle of civil unrest remain calm. A
clear head will get you to safety. Panic will always be
your enemy. I have included a few quick thoughts on how
to minimize your exposure should the worst occur.
Prior Planning. If you live or work in an urban area than
realize this area is ripe for a riot. If at all possible
avoid these areas until it is apparent that peace will
prevail. If you must venture into these areas have
several escape routes in mind. Realize that train
stations and metros may shut down as a response to unrest
so make sure you have alternative transportation. Also
make sure you have plenty of cash in case you need to
make a last minute travel arrangement. During uncertain
times, Cash is always king.
Dress Accordingly. Wear clothes that will minimize your
skins exposure. During periods of unrest, the police will
use chemical irritants. The less exposure you have to
theses irritants, the better. Seek Shelter Immediately.
Riots almost always occur outside in the streets. Find
yourself a large, well built structure and ride out the
storm there. Avoid exposing yourself to the street as
this will just make you a target for rocks, bottles, and
bullets. The best scenario is to have multiple escape
routes from your hideaway. Maintain a vigilant eye for
fires. If it has been set on fire, get out immediately.
I'm caught in the middle, now what? Realize that you are
in extreme danger. Move deliberately, slowly out of the
riot. Do not run as it will draw attention to you. DO NOT
move against the crowd. Go with the flow and slowly work
your way to the edges of the crowd. Peel off only when
you can do so without drawing attention to yourself.
Following these simple steps, remaining calm, and
thinking your way out of the problem will minimize your
chance of being injured or killed during a major riot.
Bruce Lee said, (I think it was him) that the best way to
avoid a punch is to not be there when its thrown. Expand
that to the issue of civil unrest and you will see that
the best way to avoid a riot is to not be there when its
thrown.
