FEMA and CERT Classes By Joseph Parish I have taken both FEMA classes and CERT courses and feel that both were very useful in preparation for eventual emergencies of any sort. One of Delmarva Survival Trainings main goals is to prepare our people to handle emergencies on their own and not be left at the mercy of our government to help them. As such we are gearing up for the spring time and would certainly like to have some actual hands on classroom style FEMA or CERT training. These courses will of course vary in length of time necessary to complete them. In addition each course will come with a Certificate of Completion issued by either the CERT authorities or FEMA. All materials will be provided by the respective government agencies and Delmarva Survival Training. A little background on CERT is that it is a public program used to train Community Emergency Response Team members. The program educates members about the principles of disaster preparedness associated with the various hazards which may have an impact upon their area of the state. It provides training in basic disaster response skills like fire safety, team organization, search and rescue operations and minor disaster type medical operations. CERT members can then make use of this training which they learn in the classroom as well as during exercises to assist others within their neighborhood in the event of an emergency while professional responders are immediately unable to help. Upon training the CERT members are usually encouraged to take an active part in emergency response preparations within their community. CERT training is concerned with being ready, helping people help other people and the safety associated with rescuer personnel. CERT is a realistic approach to dealing with disaster situations and instills the average citizen with the knowledge that they can take care of themselves and their neighbors. If the interest is there we would like to start planning for our first classroom activities around April of this year. We will be looking to have the introduction CERT class. The location has not currently been decided as it too will depend upon the number of people who sign up for it. This program is free and is open to the public. Joseph Parish will lead the event and we hope to have several additional speakers present. Snacks and drinks will be served. If this sounds like something that you would be interested in participating in please contact Joseph Parish at joseph.parish@survival-training.info We will provide the training if you will provide your services!
