Delmarva Survival Training needs Volunteers By Joseph Parish As a resident of the Delmarva Peninsula I completely appreciate that many disasters and emergencies could await me. These situations could very well be in a form of influenza virus which might someway strike our area or it could possibly be a terrorist attack. Perchance there is a catastrophe associated with one of the chemical plants in the northern part of our state. The point is that we can be very vulnerable to emergency situations and as such we should learn to prepare ourselves for such events. While perhaps many of the residents of Delmarva may hastily prepare to leave the area during an emergency we have to recognize that we are simply locked in here. There are basically three ways out of our tri-state area and during an evacuation those three highways will be absolutely congested. The key to surviving here would be to stay in place and work together. So far Delmarva Survival Training’s efforts to organize a preparedness group have not netted very good results. There are an endless number of catastrophic scenarios which could cause our state and local emergency crews to be stretched to the limit and our local hospitals to be overwhelmed. In such cases as these the various emergency agencies both at the local level and the state will need all the help that they can get. During a total infrastructure break down there is always safety in numbers. You will quickly find that the “Bad Guys” have increased greatly when they feel that the individuals are helpless however when grouped together they tend to think a second time. We can use as many dedicated members as we can possibly get. Hopefully, our team will eventually consist of a handful of local citizens that have a varied background and skills. We look forward to greeting doctors, nurses, farmers and a host of trades that we could use in times of emergencies. Not only do we need to develop an individual plan to take care of our families but we also need a group plan to care for our friends as well. Her on the Eastern Shore we are all “Family” and as such have to take care of each other. We have done so with small emergencies in the past so let’s now get organized and do the same for any potential disaster that may befall us. We need to quietly gather all our efforts together in preparation of an emergency that we all hope we will never have to see but just in case we should be ready. Copyright @ 2009 Joseph Parish
