The incoming Obama administration is considering setting up a government-run bank to acquire bad assets clogging the financial system, a person familiar with the Obama team's thinking said on Saturday. The U.S. Federal Reserve, Treasury and Federal Deposit Insurance Corp have been in talks about ways to ease a banking crisis that is once again deepening -- and a government-run "aggregator bank" is among the options. January 19, 2009 - "I Think I Ripped my Pants" By Joseph Parish. The title may sound like a tale from the popular kid’s show SpongeBob SquarePants however it has a certain ring of truth to it when it comes to survival. Surviving in the wild can be rough not only on the individual but also upon the persons clothing. Burrs on the woodland bushes are certain to snag the pants as are the overhanging branches getting caught on ones shirt. January 18, 2009 - "Build a groundhog snare" The groundhog, otherwise known as the woodchuck, can waste a lot of your hard-earned garden bounty in a matter of hours. They’ll nibble a little bit on one melon and then move to the next one for a few bites. Then they’ll hit the squash, and whatever else tempts their taste buds, taking a few sample bites from each veggie. Every day each groundhog will consume about 3 pounds of fruits, vegetables, grasses, and clover. You can’t fence them out because they are excellent diggers and will just tunnel under the fence. January 17, 2009 - "Grandma’s Canned Sausage" By Joseph Parish. During the canning season I can often recall that my grandmother used to take and can sausage patties. She would take fresh made patties and stack them neatly inside a wide mouth jar and then fill the container full of hot sausage grease. She would then place the lids securely on them, turn them upside down to seal and she was done. How I remember going to the food closet and seeing dozens upon dozens of jars carefully stacked upside down. January 11. 2009 - "Beeswax and Candle Making" by Janice D. Green. Worker honeybees have four special glands under their bodies that convert the sugar in honey to beeswax. When the workers are the right age, they position themselves near where the honeycomb is being built. Other worker bees collect the wax as it is produced, chew it up, and shape it into honeycombs. January 8, 2009 - "An Abundance of Pemmican Recipes" by Joseph Parish. I couldn't pass up writing an article of my own on this great survival food. Pemmican is traditionally considered a travel type of food that was popular with the Native North Americans. It generally consisted of slices of buffalo meat or lean venison that had been previously sun dried, then pounded into a paste and finally packed with a mixture of melted fat. This food was then stored in small rawhide bags until needed. Fruits such as wild berries or dried currants were often added to the paste while creating it. Click here

January 2, 2009 - "H.R. 6257: Assault Weapons Ban Reauthorization Act of 2008" Would anyone care to place a bet as to what will happen to this bill? A likely scenario would be that it gets  tacked onto the end of another bill the right before or right after the inauguration, or perhaps shortly after some lame terrorist attack? I sat in my living room chair watching the military channel on cable last evening and all of a sudden I started to think about all the ammo which is being wasted for practice.
